MATCH REPORT
Runcorn Town Youth team finally got a game played after a lengthy Christmas & New Year lay off, and they came up against a good Maghull side who at the start of the day lay in second spot in the league.
With the conditions being a gale force wind on a heavy pitch Town were the better side playing with the wind behind them in the first half and went one up with a well taken header from lone striker Mike Gott who was impressive throughout the first half. With the back four of Towns holding tight and stand in Keeper Tom Wilson pulling off a crucial save at 1-0 Town went in deservedly one up at the break. After the interval Town had to make a change when Claudio Galbraith had to leave the game after a very good half and once again were on top for the first ten minutes but were unlucky not to make more of there chances when Maghull got an equalizer in a goal mouth scramble. After a couple of great blocks by Towns defence the ball fell to a Maghull forward 10 yards out who swept the ball home to put the visitors 2-1 up Towns defence found themselves under a lot of pressure and were finding it difficult to clear the back line with every clearance coming straight back at them due to the increasing windy conditions, Town were hit with a great strike when Maghulls midfielder who hit a shot from 30 yards out which flew into the top corner of the net for 3-1 Town lost the impressive John Webster who hobbled off after a knee high challenge and the game remained at 3-1 until the last quarter when the Maghull number 9 hit a good finish low into the bottom corner, Town were still having chances but just couldn't find the back of the net and tiring found themselves 4-1 with minutes to go, a scoreline not a total reflection of the game. Not the most pleasing of games to the eye, but a lot of positives for Town to take from the game as we work towards our next game with Lower Breck Boys.
