MATCH REPORT
Town made two changes from last Saturday's victory at Oldham with Marvin Molyneux returning in place of Mark McGrath and Danny Cummins in at left back for Will Conway. It was the home side who had the first opportunity of the game with Danny Dalton's misplaced pass giving Myles Dodd the opportunity to lob keeper Carl Williams, with his 30-yard effort flying just over the bar. The opening goal came on 11 minutes with James McShane scoring his fifth of the season with his 50th goal in Town colours. He picked up the ball 25-yards out and fired in an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner of the net. Three minutes later Ashton's task got harder with striker Dodd seeing a straight red after kicking out at Tom Davies, with Town doubling their advantage after 17 minutes with another stunning strike, this time from Man of the Match Marvin Molyneux. He picked up the ball in the centre circle and advanced forward, and with no challenges coming in hit shot from 25-yards that flew into the top right hand corner giving Andrew Hewitt in the home goal no chance. After 20 minutes Ashton went close with Lee Crompton heading just wide from a free kick with Town going on to dominate the rest of the half. Emini Adegbenro overhit a cross from the right when well placed, Simon Burton was unlucky not to get on the end of a Warren Bellew cross and Adegbenro hit the post after Burton put him through. McShane almost added to his tally as he headed wide from another Bellew cross, but it was only a matter of time until the third arrived and it did after 40 minutes. Danny Dalton found Bellew on the right with Town's winger beating his man and advancing into the box before slotting past Hewitt. Town's second half performance was probably the best of the season so far with five further goals coming. Bellew should have been awarded a penalty after being felled in the box ten minutes in, but Town made it four on the hour with Greg Byrne heading in a Molyneux corner from the left hand side. Five minutes later it was 5-0 with Adegbenro hitting his fifth of the season. Substitute Jason Carey got clear down the right and crossed low across the edge of the box. The cross was just behind Bellew but fell for Mini who found the bottom left corner. Carey had the next chance with a 20-yard drive that Hewitt did well to save after good work by Byrne, and McShane should have scored when Dalton's low cross found him just three yards out but his shot hit Hewitt. Substitute Dave Roberts, who replaced Mini just after the hour mark, was teaming up well down the left with Danny Cummins, and it was from his cross that Town's sixth came after 80 minutes. He swung a ball in from the left with Mark Toohey showing great awareness to square the ball to Carey, with Town's striker scoring off the right hand post. Five minutes later it was seven with Bellew scoring from a rare headed effort following another Roberts cross. And two minutes after that the scoring was completed with Carey getting clear and scoring off the left hand post for his 50th goal in Town colours. Town's magnificent start to the season shows no sign of ending, with the win making it twenty goals scored in just four games.
