Runcorn Town crashed out of the Cheshire Amateur Cup at the Quarter Final stage after losing 2-0 at holders West Kirby.Two goals early in the first half made sure of Town's exit, and but for some poor finishing by the home side and good goalkeeping from Karl Wills, the score could quite easily have been six or seven. Town had two good chances in the opening ten minutes with Clint Burton's effort saved at the near post and Tony Wynne's shot across goal forcing a good save. West Kirby went ahead with their first real attack after 15 minutes as the ball was played across the centre of the park to the right hand side where it was layed back to full back Chris Reilly. His whipped ball was headed into the bottom corner by Kris Hesketh with Wills given no chance. Eight minutes later it was two with captain Lee Gibson scoring from the spot after Greg Byrne's challenge on Terry Cotgrave was deemed a foul by referee Sean Mohan. Mike Burke hit the post just before half time for West Kirby with the same player striking the bar at the start of the second half. When he did eventually break through minutes later, Wills pulled off a good save at his feet. West Kirby also went close with Cotgrave's 25-yard shot straight at Wills, but Town offered very little going forward. In contrast, West Kirby looked dangerous every time they attacked, with substitute Adam Lea wasting a good chance with a shot that went wide of the left hand post and Matty Carlin also hit wide from a low cross from the left. The closest Town got was with 12 minutes remaining when Wynne layed the ball off in the box for Ste Latham, but his shot flew over the bar for a goal kick to complete a sorry day for the Runcorn side.
