MATCH REPORT
Runcorn Town ended their pre-season campaign with a 2-2 draw at Ford Motors in Widnes. The game proved to be an ideal final encounter which was constantly end to end with both teams showing plenty of energy, pace and not lacking in football skill.
Will Conway opened the Ford defence early on with a superb ball that put Connor Anderson clear but his lob went well wide of the upright with the keeper stranded. Emini Adegbenro then hit the post as Runcorn pressed and at the other end, Ford's Shaw was causing the visitors defence problems. He should have given them the lead when through on goal but as Carl Williams advanced, he pulled his shot wide of the target. When Adegbenro crossed Warren Bellew brought a good save from the Ford keeper with a his low volley. Runcorn keeper Williams was called into action as he saved with his feet as Fords pressed forward. Runcorn took a deserved lead in the 36th minute when Danny Cummins headed a Marvin Molyneux corner into the top corner, the keeper just failing to keep the header out. Molyneux then struck the bottom of the post as Runcorn began to get on top and from a Bellew free kick Tony Wynne put the visitors 2-0 up in the 42nd minute. He latched onto the ball, controlled it immediately before shooting across the keeper into the far corner of the goal. Wynne then supplied a scoring opportunity to Bellew but his header sailed over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy. Changes at half time disrupted the rhythm of the visitors or perhaps the opposition closed them down more quickly, What ever way Runcorn did not begin the second half as they had finished the first. Fords were much more in the game and Williams was called into action to deny them with a good save at the foot of the post. Fords got a goal in the 56th min when Ally McRacken in acres of space on the right cut inside to fire past Williams. Runcorn were left appealing for offside but the assistant referee waived away their appeals. Fords had there tails up, some skilful play by Shaw saw him beat four defenders but then shoot over the angle. In a rare Runcorn attack Jason Carey found Anderson but his shot was charged down by a defender. Fords got an equaliser in the last minute when a cross from the left deceived Williams and Chris Lester headed the ball over the stranded keeper into the empty net. Runcorn had a couple of chances in stoppage time with a free kick from Cummins hit the wall and Carey having a shot rebound off the keeper, but a draw was a good end to what has been a great pre-season campaign.
