Managerless Runcorn Town returned to the top of the West Cheshire League after a fine 5-1 victory at Castrol Social. After a turbulent week, the players deserve credit for remaining focused on the job, with three first half goals putting Town on the way.
Robbie Moore opened the scoring after 23 minutes by heading in Kyle Hamid's excellent free kick, with James McShane doubling the lead after taking on John Dover's pass into the box and finding the bottom corner (37). On the stroke of half time Hamid was fouled on the edge of the box with the midfielder getting perfect revenge by curling the free kick into the bottom right corner.
Twelve minutes into the second half McShane's pass cut through the home defence with Will Dolan going on to score, and it was five after 73 minutes when McShane was brought down in the box - Will Dolan scoring from two yards after his initial penalty was saved.
With eight minutes remaining Castrol found the net in controversial circumstances. Town stand-in manager Eddie Smith attempted a substitution with the linesman on the touchline with his flag up to indicate it. Castrol took a corner which Stewart Boothe headed in, with Town defenders arguing that they were not ready having stopped for the proposed substitution.
Meanwhile at Pavilions, the Manager of the Month curse did not strike Rod Looker as he celebrated his award with a 6-1 win over Ellesmere Port Reserves in the Quarter Final of the West Cheshire Shield.
Peter Murphy (2), Mark Tummon (2), Anto Ellison, and Kyle Mayers were the scorers with Alan Richardson getting Port's consolation. A report on this match will be published shortly.
