Runcorn Town rounded off their West Cheshire League season in style with a 4-1 victory over Upton Athletic Association, however results elsewhere meant that Town will finish third in the league with admission into the Vodkat League now reliant on votes by current member clubs.
Town's form this season has been magnificent with the team losing just one game at home and four in total, but the destination of the title has come about because of Town's lack of victories against title contenders.
Dropped points against Halton and Newton have contributed, but the failure to finish second can be summed up by the lack of results against those at the very top of the league. Town failed to beat West Kirby, Cammell Laird Reserves and Heswall at home, with the teams only victory over the other three title rivals being a 4-0 victory at Heswall in September.
Town got off to the perfect start this evening with Warren Bellew opening the scoring after just three minutes after battling his way through the defence and slotting past the keeper.
The lead was doubled after 23 minutes when Tyson Eyo played a ball over the top which James McShane ran onto before hitting a first time lob which beat the keeper.
Town were in control of the game but Upton got back into it after 63 minutes when Tom Fellow chested the ball down on the edge of the box and hit a first time shot past Richie Mottram into the top corner.
However Town made it 3-1 ten minutes later when Tony Wynne controlled a hopeful ball through virtually on the goal-line and hammered the ball through the keepers legs.
The game was wrapped up with two minutes remaining when Bellew picked up the ball on the halfway line and ran through the Upton defence before slotting past the keeper.
