TOWN TITLE HOPES EXTINGUISHED AT LAIRDS
Runcorn Town's hopes of capturing the West Cheshire League One title were extinguished as they lost 3-2 at Cammell Laird Reserves in the game of the day.

Whilst it is still mathematically possible for Town to capture the title, they will need several results to go their way in order to do so.

Town got off to a dreadful start in the match with Lairds going ahead after just nine minutes when Alan Bull got clear and delivered a perfect ball across the box with Alex Bishop scoring from close range.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0 when man-of-the-match Bull again caused havoc on the left and cut inside before firing a low shot inside the near post.

Town got back into it seven minutes later from the penalty spot with Warren Bellew converting after a handball in the box. Lairds had a few chances to go ahead with Bull and Bishop both going very close, but on the stroke of half time Town found themselves level with the goal of the game.

Tony Wynne was upended 20-yards out by the last defender with Marvin Molyneux firing in an unstoppable shot into the top right corner of the net.

With Town having their tails up, half time came completely at the wrong time, and despite dominating much of the second hand, could not find the goal that their play deserved.

Lairds did look dangerous on the break with Chris Barrow wasting a glorious chance with 15 minutes remaining with a free header from a left wing cross that he headed wide, but the forward atoned for this with five minutes of the game remaining. A free kick from the right found Barrow in the box, and his header went in off the left hand post to send the home fans into raptures and put Lairds in poll position in the title race.
