LATE LATE TOWN SCRAMBLE WIN
Runcorn Town returned to the summit of West Cheshire League One with just two games left after a 2-0 victory over Helsby, but had to rely on to very late goals to claim all three points.

In truth it was a poor game with Helsby having the better chances in the first half. Wayne Welbreck forced Richie Mottram into a save after just 55 seconds with Kev Patterson heading over the bar from a free kick when unmarked in the box.

The best Town could muster was a David Ginever header from a corner that went just over and a shot from Ste Latham that was well saved by Andy Stringer.

The second half saw Town step things up slightly without creating any real clear cut chances, with Tyson Eyo having the best chance with a fierce shot from 25-yards after 65 minutes. At the other end Ginever went even closer this time with an attempted header back to Mottram that bounced up and off the crossbar.

With just two minutes to go Town got the breakthrough when Tony Wynne rose to meet a cross from the left hand side and head into the net to send the home crowd into raptures. And three minutes into injury time Jason Carey made the game safe with a 30-yard volley that Stringer mis-read, the ball finding the bottom corner.

Town now have just two games to go - away at Lairds on Saturday and at home to Upton AA on Monday - and six points will bring the league title to Runcorn for the first time. Sounds easy on paper, but will be a lot more difficult in reality.
