CLINICAL TOWN DEFEAT MAGHULL
Runcorn Town kept up their championship charge after a fine 5-1 victory over Maghull at Pavilions.

Maghull came into the game having beaten Town's championship hopefuls Cammell Laird, Heswall and Newton in 2010, with Town expecting a tough game.

Maghull looked sharp early on without testing Richie Mottram in goal, with Town's nerves eased after eight minutes when they scored with their first attack.

Darren Kinsey, a midweek signing from Warrington Town, put in a deep cross from the left towards Tony Wynne up front, with the forward's first touch leaving him with just the keeper to beat. West Cheshire One's leading scorer made no mistake as he gave Town the lead with his 20th goal of an outstanding season.

Maghull continued to press and had two great chances to equalise in the next ten minutes. First Sam Wilkie burst through on the right and opted to shoot from an acute angle with Tom Foley in a better position in the centre, then Foley got behind Town's defence from Michael Boyle's long ball with his lob attempt going wide.

The pressure was on Town but they doubled their lead after 18 minutes when Dave Ginever's header from a right wing corner was only cleared to Danny Dalton, with the defender almost bursting the net with a powerful close range shot.

If that was harsh on Maghull, it got worse after 25 minutes when Town were awarded a penalty following a foul in the box. Tyson Eyo made no mistake from the spot to put Town 3-0 up and effectively end the game as a contest.

Ian Robinson almost made it four just after the half hour wuith a header at the far post from another right wing corner, but he couldnt stretch far enough to direct his effort on target.

The second half saw Town come out in a determined mood and created a number of chances early on, with Ginever going the closest with another header from a corner that was cleared off the line.

Town were playing well with McEvoy getting clear on the hour and seeing his intended cross for Jason Carey deflected inches wide of the post with the keeper beaten. Carey also went close minutes later when he shot wide from Tony Wynne's low cross.

After 65 minutes Maghull got a lifeline when Kinsey was adjudged to have handled, with leading scorer Lee Tynan's shot just beating Mottram who dived the right way. Three minutes later Kinsey made amends with a ball that played in McEvoy, with sheer persistance enabling him to make it 4-1.

Town's fifth arrived after 82 minutes with Jason Carey scoring his 19th goal of the season when Eyo played him clear of the defence, with Carey rounding the keeper and scoring into the empty net.

Maghull had a chance to make it 5-2 late on when the excellent Ginever was harshly adjudged to have handled in the box, with Tynan this time rattling the bar with a fierce effort before the ball was cleared.
