Runcorn Town Reserves were given a stern test by Haydock in last nights pre-season game as they went down 3-2.
Gareth Jones put Haydock ahead when he broke clear of the home side's defence, with former Town midfielder Dave Dempsey putting the visitors 2-0 up towards the end of the first half with a curling shot from the right corner of the box.
Despite enjoying good possession and keeping posession for long periods, Town never really threatened in the first half, and it got even worse at the start of the second when Adam Pyjunas put Haydock 3-0 up.
To Town's credit they never gave up and pulled one back through defender Paul Illidge who finished off a good passing move to score in the bottom right hand corner.
Suddenly Town were on the front foot and Pete Murphy grabbed the home side's second with a cool finish from Ged Bushell's cross. Yet despite pushing for the equaliser for almost the rest of the game, Town were unable to grab the goal that their play deserved with Haydock holding out for the win.
