Castrol Social continue to dominate games over Runcorn Town, with Castrol's 2-1 victory leaving Town needing two wins in the last two games to guarantee the runners up spot.
Since caretaker manager Eddie Smith masterminded a 5-1 victory in October 2007, Castrol have won all three league games against Town as well as last season's Pyke Cup Final.
Town had chances to be a couple of goals up early on with Simon Burton guilty on two occasions. He shot wide after Kyle Hamid had put him free and also heading Danny Cummins' cross over the bar. This proved costly after 34 minutes when Town's failure to clear the ball led to Mike Thelwell finding the top corner from inside the box.
Hamid should have levelled for Town when Jason Carey put him free but he shot straight at the keeper under pressure from a defender. Castrol's second arrived with 20 minutes to go when a free kick was headed across goal with Mark Ryan converting from close range.
Burton finally got the goal his play deserved late on with the goal bringing him level with Carey for leading goalscorer, but Town could not find the equaliser that their play deserved.
Castrol's keeper John Gibbs was injured in stoppage time and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. We have since been advised by Castrol that he had 7 stitches in his head and was feeling "groggy", but otherwise is fine. Everyone at Town wishes him all the best in his recovery.
