Any hopes that Runcorn Town had of taking the West Cheshire League title from West Kirby were severely dashed as they were held to a goalless draw at Ellesmere Port.
With a depleted first team squad, Dave Ginever and Danny Cummins were called up from the reserve team with Ged Bushell and Paul Illidge on the bench. Port had the better of the opening exchanges but rarely troubled Town with Ginever and Dean Woolley looking comfortable at the back.
Little was created at the other end with the first real shot of note coming in the 36th minute with Jason Carey shooting wide after Ste Latham's ball over the top put him in. Town should have gone ahead on the stroke of half time when Joe Davies crossed from the right with Aarron Brown heading just over.
The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock was on the hour when Brown played in Carey, and his shot from the edge of the box was saved onto the post by the keeper with the ball rebounding into the keeper's arms.
Danny Salt then came to Town's rescue with two goalline clearance's as Port pressed. The first was a free kick from the left that was hit goalwards and the second a cross from the right that was headed towards goal.
Town went close with four minutes remaining when Cummins curling shot was deflected just wide of the right hand post, with Danny Dalton also seeing a 30-yard effort fly straight at the keeper in stoppage time.
West Kirby now need one win from their remaining four games to make sure of the title.
