Runcorn Town moved closer to promotion back to West Cheshire League One with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Willaston.
Aaron Brown put Town ahead after just three minutes after a good first time ball in from new signing Ben Obong on the right. Town continued to create and miss chances for the majority of the rest of the half, before Willaston shocked the home team with an equaliser after 41 minutes.
The ball was crossed from the right with Jimmy Hilditch rising to head home at the back post. It was the first goal Town had conceded in over 500 minutes of football.
The second half was more even with the introduction of Darren Moore as a half-time substitute eventually proving inspired, with Moore setting up Town's last two goals.
First, on 65 minutes, he played an excellent ball through to Ian Robinson that split Willaston's static defence, with Robinson keeping his cool to net a debut goal for the club.
A one goal lead is always nervous, but Town put the game beyond Willaston with four minutes remaining when Moore's free kick on the right was not cleared by the defence with Obong scoring from close range.
With Town's unbeaten run now stretching to 14 matches, they are a good bet to go up with just six games remaining. And next week's top of the table clash against West Kirby Reserves at Pavilions should go a long way to determining the eventual Champions.
Meanwhile Runcorn Town Reserves put in a good performance with a 1-1 draw at fourth placed Grange Athletic. John Dover got Town's goal with Paul O'Donovan netting for Grange. A full report on that game will follow tomorrow.
It was brought to my attention today that in last weekend's game, George Donnelly actually scored a hat-trick with Aaron Brown getting one. Many apologies for this inaccurate information, which was caused due to the secretary, Phil Crilly, passing me the wrong information! To the best of my knowledge, today's scorers were correct!Posted at 19:19 on Saturday 24th February 2007 - Viewed 298 times
