Runcorn Town's home game against Upton Athletic Association was today abandoned after 22 minutes with the Chester side leading 1-0.
It was touch and go whether the game would be on due to the weather, with the pitch wet but playable at 3pm. However a torrential downpour just after kick off left some areas of the pitch completely underwater with the referee checking the pitch after just 15 minutes but allowing play to continue.
Upton took the lead shortly after when Karl Wills failed to collect a cross which allowed Danny Andrews to score into the empty net. But with surface water evident all over the pitch and the rain still pouring, every ball along the floor was being held up, with the referee having little hesitation in abandoning the game.
As an aside, with heavy rain forecast this evening, tomorrow's Cheshire FA Youth Cup Final between Victoria Laird Colts and Nantwich Town Youth, which was due to be held on Runcorn Town's pitch, has also been postponed.
