Runcorn Town were runners up in this afternoon's Pyke Cup Final with Castrol Social running out worthy 2-0 winners at Vauxhall Motors FC.
Town started the brighter and were probably the better team in the first 15 minutes but were unable to turn the dominance into goals. After that it was mostly Castrol for the rest of the half with the Ellesmere Port team taking advantage of the wind and rain to apply pressure.
This pressure almost paid off after 35 minutes when a shot from was deflected with Karl Wills turning the effort onto the bar and away for a corner. However Town's luck ran out just before half time when a free kick from the left was lofted into the box and Gary Scott headed home.
The second half saw Town again struggle for ideas and Stu Carroll's goal with 17 minutes remaining killed off any hopes for Town as the midfielder found the bottom corner after Town failed to clear the ball.
Town's day was summed up when James McShane had the ball in the net from Simon Burton's shot which came back off the post, but the forward was given offside. However Castrol were worthy winners on the day and perhaps wanted it more.
